Why Your Diet Isn't The Answer.

If you've been following me for a while you'll know I'm a "principles over methods" kind of guy. I think it's hugely important when it comes to strength, fitness and nutrition. This is a people business, any everyone is different, so only having one method to achieve an outcome is never going to be hugely helpful. And when it comes to food in particular, I think it is even more important. See, eating is a hugely personal thing, and it never EVER just comes down to what fuel you need for performance and body composition. It has a load of other essential components to it that will define your progress as much as your macro split and calorie amount. I'm talking about things like:

  • Your likes and dislikes

  • Your upbringing

  • Your cultural background

  • Your religion or absence of

  • Your income

  • Your daily routine

  • Your social circle and commitments

And a load more other things too. These are the things that will determine HOW you approach your nutrition, and HOW you reach you calorie target and protein intake. The method always needs to be adaptable to any/all of those things. And the thing that is often forgotten by trainers is that not everyone is starting in the same place that you did, and that you have to go and meet the client where they are. Not everyone has access to a well stocked supermarket with a load of choice on ingredients and popular "health" products like 1 cal sprays and almond milk. Not everyone can justify the additional cost of organic/grass fed/gluten free products that you've decided are "better" (they're often not). Not everyone wants to eat the foods and ingredients that you grew up eating (I grew up eating meat and 2 veg as the son of a butcher which was great for my nutrition but bland by a lot of peoples standards). Not everyone has the skill and understanding to execute a plant based diet without negatively affecting their nutrition. What I'm saying is that nutrition is an incredibly personal thing, which is why most set methods, meal plans, and restrictions don't work. You need proper coaching, to take you from where you are, to where you want to be. You need proper coaching to help you overcome the unique difficulties you face in your week. You need proper coaching to help you find the best way for you to apply the basic principles of calorie balance and consistency to your lifestyle. So if you've been stuck in the same place for a while, not making progress, and falling at similar hurdles over and over, the next diet isn't going to be the answer. Coaching is the answer. And if you want some high quality coaching from an experienced coach with nearly 15 years experience of working with a huge variety of people, I'm available for online coaching now. Just get in touch. Thanks, Ian.
